In the Audi model range, sitting above the standard A6 Avant and the sledgehammer RS6 Avant is the car we have here – the S6 Avant. The S6 Avant is intended to be one of those cars that sits happily between fast and very fast, having more than enough power for road use but never dipping it toes into the realm of excess.
Excessive is definitely not a word you can use to describe the S6. In this particular project Audi has managed to balance perfectly the lust for performance and the mindfulness of everyday practicality. So, how exactly has the German marque achieved this?
For a start, Audi has been bold with its choice of engine. The S6 Avant is now exclusively diesel powered, and while the call to switch from petrol may raise a few eyebrows, the decision makes an awful lot of sense when looked at in detail. The engine itself is Audi’s sensational 3.0-litre turbocharged 6-cylinder unit, one of the finest diesel engines on the market, with its power bumped up to a potent 345bhp. Crucially, the engine also brings 516lb ft of torque which makes the engine effortlessly accelerate in any higher gear and throw you back into your seat in the lower ones. Gear changing duties are carried out by a Tiptronic automatic transmission with 8 speeds, and the power goes to the tarmac via Audi’s legendary Quattro all-wheel drive system.
Acceleration takes around 5-seconds from 0 to 62mph, but this is the S6, and Audi makes it clear that this car is not about sheer performance – you’ll want the RS6 Avant for that. What this engine manages to achieve is blistering performance balanced with respectable economy, a very difficult task indeed. Behave well, and you can see more than 35mpg from the S6 and the diesel unit is also quieter and more laid-back than the monstrous petrol found in its more powerful sibling.
So that’s the Audi S6 Avant’s mandate – performance with practicality. Being an Audi there’s also the expected level of luxury and refinement. Pick a Vorsprung model and you even get full leather upholstery, adaptive air suspension, dynamic all-wheel steering, laser headlights with an LED matrix system and a Bang and Olufsen premium sound system, among many other things. Let us also not forget, being an estate, the S6 Avant also has 565-litres of boot space available, or 1,680-litres with the rear seats folded down.
