Posted 5 years agoAudi has a reputation for being sensible and straight-laced, and there’s nothing wrong with that, of course. It makes superb vehicles, cars that possess some of the highest quality you can find on the lease market, and its A3, A4, A6, and A8 models embody the sensible shapes and styles of the marque. The A7, from an engineering perspective, is also sensible, but Audi’s engineers have created a GT car here that has a greater emphasis on styling over substance. It’s still the same powerful, efficient Audi we know, but the pen of the designer was perhaps a little looser this time.
What we have here is a sort of large, 4-door coupe that clearly takes inspiration from Grand Tourers of the 60s and 70s with its sloping roof design and hatchback rear end. It’s been with us since 2010, when Audi launched the first A7, which was actually a vehicle heavily based on a 2009 concept car known as the “Sportback Concept”. At the time of its launch, Audi promised that the new A7 Sportback would bring together “...the best of three worlds: the sporty elegance of a coupe, the comfort of a sedan and the practicality of a station wagon.” And well, that basically sums up what we have in the A7 Sportback in 2022, a car now in its second generation.
An Audi is almost always all-wheel drive, which again is the case with this A7 Sportback that of course comes complete with the quattro system the brand is known across the world for. Making those wheels spin is the customer’s choice of petrol or diesel engines, each coming fitted with a 48-volt mild hybrid system.
Audi’s famous 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine is probably the optimum choice for fuel efficiency, but you can also treat yourself with a turbocharged petrol engine with around 260bhp too. Much here depends on the personal taste and driving style of the customer, of course. Regardless of which engine is chosen, a 7-speed automatic gearbox will be the relationship manager between the engine and the quattro system.
