Posted 2 months agoThe Audi RS3 saloon is the mutated and power-hungry version of the Audi A3 saloon, a car that’s fairly small as this body style goes, with its 4-door layout and boot not much bigger than the hatchback upon which it is based. Its compact proportions make it a great candidate for Audi’s famous ‘RS’ treatment, which turns the laid back A3 into the high-performance, driver focused RS3.
Audi’s RS cars are always mouth-wateringly tempting, and the RS3 saloon is no different. Underneath the bonnet is one of the great engines of our time and a true icon of the Audi brand – the 2.5-litre turbocharged 5-cylinder. This engine is the most powerful 5-cylinder in the world and has won the award for best engine in the world (in the 2 to 2.5-liter category) an incredible nine times on the bounce. It’ll provide you with 395bhp, with every single one of those horses sent to the ground via the ever-brilliant Quattro all-wheel drive system.
Results produced by this engine are spectacular – 0-62mph takes just 4.1-seconds and the car has to be electronically limited to a 155mph top speed – though there is an option to increase this to 174mph. More than that though, the 5-cylinder is full of character and makes a terrific noise, feeling at all times like a true race-bred heart reminiscent of Audi’s motorsport creations.
Of course, at the end of the day this isn’t a racing car, it’s an Audi road model and as such it has to be civilised and simple to live with on a daily basis. Audi RS3 models get extra special treatment over the standard A3 cars, reflective of their higher status, but there’s also plenty of options for Synergy customers to choose from to make their RS3 saloon more personal to them. What you really need to know is that when you just want to pop to the shops or drive your family somewhere quietly and safely, the RS3 saloon can handle it perfectly. The famous engine is even capable of behaving itself for a while, being hushed at lower revs, while the automatic DSG gearbox makes driving effortless in all situations.
Ultimately though, this is a driver’s car. It’s deadly accurate on British roads and boasts extraordinary grip and nimbleness, making it a very, very fast car in this country.
