Posted 4 years agoFor a large period of BMW’s model history, the Bavarian firm was producing a 3-series coupe and convertible that offered its customers something a little sportier than the traditional saloon or ‘Touring’ estate. However, in 2013, BMW decided to separate its coupes and convertibles away from the more sensible body styles, giving rise to the even-numbered models, and this, the BMW 4-series.
The BMW 4-series is almost entirely made up of the same architecture and technology as the popular 3-series but features a more glamorous coupe or open-top convertible body to go around it. A new name and look helped separate this car out as something much more desirable, and as the 3-series already drove like a sports car, the shared DNA and engineering had helped the new BMW 4-series become a very popular machine.
BMW first showed off the new 4-Series designation in coupe form, but not long after the BMW 4-series convertible arrived, which is the car we feature on this page. A folding soft-top really brings something to the table in car design, with the roofless atmosphere giving the ability to transform any drive into a real event. Like other BMW 4-series, it still keeps its muscular haunches and this handsome new BMW has a much more distinctive silhouette than its family members.
Synergy’s lease customers should be aware that having a folding roof does eat into the overall practicality of a car such as this. However, the 220-litres of boot space remaining is enough for most and of course, being a BMW 4-series there are still 4 seats available for ferrying around family and friends.
Despite its Hollywood drop-top image, the BMW 4-series Convertible still features the same selection of superb engines as its sibling, the BMW 3-series, so efficiency and low road tax not something that needs to be sacrificed. As with many BMW products, the most popular engine choice tends to be the 2.0-litre turbo diesel, badged ‘ BMW 420d’ in this case. However, there’s still plenty of fun available for those wanting more performance, most noticeably from the 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo petrol engine – badged ‘BMW 440i’. The extra oomph that this engine provides equates to 326bhp and a distinctive engine note that makes the BMW 440i very difficult to resist.
The BMW 4 Series Convertible M Sport includes aerodynamic body styling, M light alloy wheels, leather interior and high-gloss shadowline exterior trim. The BMW 4 Series Convertible Sport includes a black exterior and sport interior trim, sports front seats and light alloy wheels, creating an athletic style.
BMW is world-renowned for producing cars that are engaging and exciting to drive, but the BMW 4-series Convertible is just as easily enjoyed at low speeds on bright summer days.
