Posted 3 weeks agoThere’s no questioning the pedigree of the BMW M4. This mighty sports car might well be based on the 4-series coupe, but in M4 guise it’s a totally different animal. This particular version is the convertible, meaning you can experience the thrilling performance and dynamic capabilities of a thoroughbred M4 all while letting the sun and the air flood your cabin.
A proper performance car requires a proper engine and in the M4 convertible you’re given one of the great modern combustion engines – BMW’s brilliant 3.0-litre twin-turbo 6-cylinder engine. You can expect 425bhp in standard M4 trim or 444bhp in the special ‘Competition Pack’ model, enough for thrilling acceleration and an electronically limited top speed. How fast is it exactly? Well, you’re looking at just 4.5-seconds to 62mph with the electronics restraining the M4 convertible when it reaches 155mph. Gears are taken care of by an 8-speed double-clutch automatic with F1-style ‘flappy paddle’ gear selectors behind the steering wheel, so you never have to take your hands off the wheel.
The M4 convertible is sharp but not quite as sharp as the M4 coupe to drive. It most certainly is the better car to enjoy the raspy, evocative soundtrack in though, and you’ll only really notice the difference between the coupe and convertible when driving on the limit, something that really isn’t possible to reach on a public road. Another consideration is that the inclusion of the folding soft roof means that storage space in the boot has been cut by roughly half over the M4 coupe. In the M4 convertible you’ll get 220-litres of boot space compared to the 445-litres in the coupe, but this isn’t a car people usually lease if they’re looking for practicality. Having said that, if you do ned to use your boot often, it’ll be something to keep in mind.
Inside the cabin there’s room for four occupants, though with no rear doors passengers will have to climb in via the front doors and the folding seats. Once everyone is in though, you’ll find another superb BMW interior with fantastic materials and construction, as well as intuitive controls. The ‘iDrive’ infotainment system is famed for being simple and easy to use, and every BMW has a certain feel to it, meaning drivers of previous BMW products should feel right at home. If it’s your first, it certainly won’t be long before you feel the very same way either.
