We’ve seen a lot of new high-end SUVs over the last year or so – the Audi Q8, Bentley Bentayga have joined the Range Rover competing in the upper echelons of the SUV sector and in 2019, BMW brings its own offering to a competition already packed with some remarkable cars.
First impressions of the new X7 tell you that it certainly isn’t shy - its large kidney grills and wide stance make a real statement, similar to the offerings of its rivals but distinctly BMW in its execution. Nobody will be in any doubt as to what you’re driving. It also comes with seating for 7.
The main power source is equally impressive, being a 3.0-litre quad-turbo 6-cylinder diesel badged as the ‘M50d’ and producing close to 400bhp and 760Nm of torque. It helps the substantial X7 – that weighs in at over 2.3-tonnes – to 62mph from a standstill in just 5.4-seconds while keeping CO2 emissions at a respectable 185g/km, which is not bad at all for a car with the quoted power. As for gearboxes, just one is available, the 8-speed automatic found in the majority of the Bavarian company’s stable.
If that happens to be a little too much power, a 3.0-litre 6-cylinder turbo unit is also available, featuring 336bhp and 450Nm of torque. This is badged as the ‘40i’. There’s also a ‘30d’ motor - a smaller diesel unit - though still possessing a solid 265hp and 620Nm. All X7 models come with ‘xDrive’ all-wheel drive capability, making them capable of handling tough conditions and off-road terrains.
At the entry point, an X7 comes with a lot of kit. 21-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, ambient lighting, front and rear heated seats, soft-close doors, high-beam assistant, the BMW display key, gesture control, quad-zone climate control and BMW professional navigation all come as standard. On higher specifications you can find a Harmon/kardon premium sound system, ventilated and massage seating, a heads-up display, rear seat entertainment and a panoramic sunroof.
