With the arrival of a new Ford Transit Connect also comes a new Ford Tourneo Connect, a highly practical and spacious human cargo mover. Available as a 5 or 7-seater (named Grand Tourneo Connect) this is a car for comfortably moving around people and their things with ease. Here we’re going to look closely at the 5-seat version.
The original Tourneo Connect was introduced in 2002 but the new 3rd generation Tourneo Connect replaces the model that was introduced in 2013 and benefits from a strong selection of new features while retaining what made it a quality machine in the first place.
Starting with power, the Tourneo Connect comes with the option of either petrol or diesel engines. The multi award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol with a 6-speed manual is a fine choice for those covering fewer miles, and Ford’s improved ‘EcoBlue’ 1.5-litre diesels are also on offer with impressive economy and CO2 outputs, they can manage nearly 50mpg while only giving out 118g/km of CO2. As a new Ford, the Tourneo Connect also benefits from the new 8-speed automatic gearbox that is a significant upgrade on the outgoing units in terms of smoothness and responsiveness.
Inside is where the Tourneo Connect makes its most significant impressions. The excellent seating system remains in the new model, where different combinations and layouts can be deployed for flexibility depending on whether you’re carrying passengers, cargo, bulky or longer items. The seating can be folded, tumbled forwards or removed entirely to cater for different needs.
In terms of driver assistance and technology, the new Tourneo Connect gets Ford’s SYNC3 infotainment system inside a new 6-inch touchscreen, Traffic Sign Recognition with Intelligent Speed Assist and Pre-Collision Assist as the new additions. Standard features such as climate control and cruise control, as well as new options such as wireless charging for smartphones and Ford’s ‘Quickclear’ windscreen system.
