The HR-V is a little unusual in the motoring world, managing to simultaneously be early and late to the SUV party. Honda originally launched the 1st generation of HR-V back in 1999 as an attractive, fairly fashionable car that the firm marketed towards younger people with active lifestyles, very similar to the trends we see today. Production of the HR-V ended in 2006, just short of the SUV boom that snowballed at the beginning of the 2010’s, but as consumer demand for this type of vehicle soared, it brought the HR-V back in 2016 to cater for those demands.
Obviously, vehicle design and technology has moved on quite a bit since the 1st generation of HR-V first took to the road, but Honda retained some ingredients that made the original model a success. For a start, design is at the core of the HR-V’s characteristics, with a sleek, sporty shape and rear door handles cleverly integrated into the C-pillar to give echoes of the original 3-door HR-V.
The HR-V, a 1.5-litre 130bhp ‘i-VTEC’ petrol unit comes with either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed ‘CVT’ automatic. The latter features steering-wheel mounted paddles for additional control, but the 6-speed manual is highly regarded and enjoyable to use as it is. Mid-2019 will see the arrival of sportier version of the HR-V, powered by a 1.5-litre ‘VTEC Turbo’ petrol, offering a sportier 179bhp unit and enhanced driving dynamics.
A comfortable car both to drive and be a passenger in, the Honda HR-V also has a decent sized boot for a small SUV, with 448-litres of space increasing to 1,533-litres when the rear seats are folded down. In the front, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system sits prominently in the minimalist dashboard that features the likes of Bluetooth and DAB digital radio. Being a Honda, the options list is pretty small, with the firm focusing on offering well equipped trim levels over extensive additional extras.
The Honda HR-V is a well-rounded, smooth riding SUV with impressive levels of comfort and space and attractive design. This is definitely one to consider if a compact SUV is on your car leasing list.
