Posted 2 months agoThe RC is a luxury coupe from Lexus that comes with hybrid power, or good old fashioned V8 grunt.
Many manufacturers offer a coupe version of their popular executive saloons - think BMW 4-series or Audi A5. Well, what we have here is the coupe version of Lexus’s IS saloon, albeit with some changes, the most notable being the addition of a full-blown ‘F’ model, denoting a Lexus with serious sporting performance.
The ‘RC F’ is powered by a mighty hand-built 5.0-litre V8 engine producing 463bhp that’s capable of sending the sportiest version of the RC to 62mph in around 4.5-seconds. This is clearly a fearsome sports car and it is engineered to thrill and engage the driver. However, it isn’t the main car of the RC range.
Primarily, the RC is a hybrid, like the majority of the Lexus range. Away from the ‘F’, the hybrid RC uses a 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine in combination with a high output electric motor for an output of around 220bhp. Performance is more warm than hot, 62mph takes a touch over 8-seconds, but the benefits of the hybrid technology become clear, with the RC ‘300h’ able to achieve over 40mpg quite comfortably while only pushing out 114g/km of CO2 into the atmosphere.
Lexus offers a choice then, between old-fashioned V8 growl and state of the art hybrid power and each will have its fans. Those Synergy customers who have experience with machines such as the BMW M4 will see the RC F has an exciting, distinctly Japanese alternative to such models, whereas buyers of diesel coupes from the same marques could well see the RC as an exciting alternative to those cars.
The standard RC currently comes in 3 different trim levels, but even the most basic car is well equipped – a Lexus characteristic. Front and rear parking sensors, electrically adjustable and heated front seats, a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, adaptive cruise control and Lexus’s safety bundle ‘Lexus Safety System+’ is all offered as standard. Next on the ladder is the sportier ‘F-Sport’ trim with its styling enhancements, larger alloy wheels, sport seats with heating and ventilation and adaptive suspension. After that, only the top-spec ‘Takumi’ remains, which offers, among other things, a premium Mark Levinson surround sound system.
You can think of the RC and RC F as two sides of the same coin, two different executions of the same car. Each has its strengths, and each guarantees Lexus quality and exciting driving dynamics.
