Lexus has said that it believes 80% of the people who end up driving one of its new ‘UX’ compact SUVs will be a new to the brand. The Japanese luxury manufacturer doesn’t put nearly as many cars onto UK roads as the likes of BMW or Mercedes-Benz, but its experience with hybrid technology – as well as its immense reputation for quality and reliability in both its homeland and the USA - are making it increasingly relevant to UK customers.
The new Lexus UX is the manufacturer’s first baby SUV, a compact car that almost every other manufacturer now produces. In the motoring world, these little SUVs are hotcakes – everyone wants one – and Lexus is getting to the party a bit late, but late is better than never and Lexus produces deeply desirable machines.
The UX is a hybrid-only machine utilising a 2.0-litre petrol engine and a powerful electric motor. Together they provide around 181bhp, but the electric motor assists in bringing CO2 emissions of just 94g/km and fuel efficiency is quoted as being in the region of 50mpg. An ‘E-CVT’ automatic transmission is the only option for your gearbox, impressive in both its smoothness and scientifically – in theory it has an infinite number of gears. The options list is fairly short – a common occurrence with Japanese manufacturers – but all-wheel drive is something that can be specified. It won’t give the fairly low-riding UX much in the way of off-road ability, but it does provide extra security in difficult road conditions.
3 trim levels will be made available for the new Lexus UX hybrid lease deals, with mid-spec ‘F-Sport’ and top-spec ‘Takumi’ offering attractive levels of extra kit, but even the base model comes extremely well-equipped. The entry-level UX comes with ‘Lexus Safety System+’ which bundles Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, a Pre-Collision System, Automatic High Beam, Road Sign Recognition, Lane Departure Alert and Lane Tracing Assist. A 7-inch infotainment system complete with European navigation, Bluetooth and DAB is also present, alongside a reversing camera and climate control.
