Posted 2 years agoIn the relentless war for hot hatchback supremacy, the Mercedes-AMG A-Class hatchback stands tall. Of all the cars duking it out to be the King in this sector, the AMG A-Class has possibly the best claim to the throne. It has ferocious power, a luxurious build and the expertise of one of the world’s best performance divisions to call upon.
This is not a Mercedes-Benz; this is in fact a Mercedes-AMG, and that’s significant. AMG is Mercedes’s high performance and sports car division. A company responsible for some of the most fearsome road cars to wear the Mercedes tri-pointed star, as well as being involved in Formula 1 and DTM – the German touring car championship.
AMG had humble beginnings, starting as just a two-man operation in the 1960’s, but the company now employs more than 1700 workers at its specialist facility in Affalterbach, Germany, where it produces some of the fastest and most exciting road cars in the world. Which leads us on to the A-Class we have here…
In its peak form – the A45 S model – this car can boast of having the most powerful 2.0-litre mass production engine in the world with a remarkable 416bhp output. This is put onto the tarmac by a sophisticated all-wheel drive system and that allows for awesome grip and a staggering acceleration. 0-62mph takes just 3.9-seconds, enough to bother some supercars and make a Golf GTI look positively pedestrian by comparison.
A35 and A45 models are also available, offering a little less ferocity but not at the expense of overall driving enjoyment. All A-Class AMG models have a precise, neutral handling characteristic that makes them very easy to drive at pace on UK roads, their relatively small stature and all-wheel drive also aiding general enjoyment of the smaller, tighter turns of our native road network. A rapid-fire double-clutch gearbox is offered on all models too, with ‘flappy-paddle’ shifters mounted to the steering wheel reminiscent of those found on the legendary Mercedes F1 cars.
Those who will drive this car on a regular basis will be pleased to know that AMG does not strip a car out to make it faster. All the technology and luxury fit and finish found in the standard A-Class is here, with the excellent new MBUX infotainment system, leather seating and a whole host of gadgets and driving modes available to play with.
