Posted 2 years agoThe A-Class saloon is a fairly new addition to the Mercedes-Benz line up, but it’s fully up to speed with what a modern Mercedes should look, feel and go like. We know the A-Class saloon already as a smartly dressed compact car that looks the business wherever it goes, but now there’s even more reason to pay attention to it, because this isn’t just an A-Class saloon.
This car isn’t just a Mercedes-Benz, it’s actually a Mercedes-AMG, and that changes quite a lot. AMG is Mercedes’s high-performance road car and motorsport wing, a company that produces the hottest and most exciting cars that the Mercedes name appears upon. It’s also involved in Formula 1 and DTM, which is the German touring car championship.
AMG is owned by Mercedes’s parent company Daimler but is also a separate organisation. The company employs more than 1700 workers at its specialist factory and development centre in Affalterbach, Germany, it’s sure come a long way since it began as a two-man operation back in the mid-1960’s.
The A-Class AMG saloon differs to its hatchback sibling not only in body style, but also in what is actually available in terms of hardware. The saloon does not come with the ‘A45’ engine option, instead it comes only as an ‘A35’. With over 300bhp it’s surely not to disappoint though, as it has a 155mph top speed and can race away to 62mph from a standing start in just a touch under 5-seconds. A sophisticated all-wheel drive system helps to put all that power down onto the road, which goes some way to explaining the superb acceleration on offer, as well as the excellent grip in the corners. A-Class AMG models like this saloon have an accurate and precise feel to their handling, they’re compact cars which makes them feel very much at home on the narrow turns of the British road network.
AMG cars are never stripped-out track machines. All the latest technology remains present and there’s always that fantastic, luxurious build quality that Mercedes is so well regarded for. The new MBUX infotainment system is there, along with an array of further gadgets and driving modes that can help Synergy customers make their AMG A-Class fit to their tastes.
