Six generations of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate just goes to show that this car continues to set the benchmark for combining spaciousness, comfort and practicality in this premium segment. Based on the outstanding E-Class Saloon, the conversion into Estate form is elegantly executed, and the gently tapering rear doesn’t do anything to hamper the space within its cabin or load area.
It's also packed with the latest equipment and toys, making it almost autonomous - and the optional air suspension makes it one of the best riding cars around today. Combine that with quality diesel engines, a smooth automatic transmission and an infotainment system featuring just about everything you'll ever need, and you're in one of the most accomplished estate cars on the market.
The E-Class Estate doesn't just seat five either, it has a trick up its sleeve - there is a possibility of two more seats, turning it into an SUV-challenging seven-seater. Since 2016, Mercedes has reinstated the option of a couple of child-seats in the boot area. In standard five-occupant guise, the E-Class Estate's cargo hold will swallow 640 litres of luggage. If you want more, you can expand it by 30 litres by making the rear seat backrest more upright. Folding the rear seats flat via controls in the load area will further boost boot volume to 1,820 litres.
For a decent-sized estate that may be used to lug weighty loads, tow trailers or simply handle motorways competently, the pulling-power of a diesel engine makes the most sense for this car. That said, the Mercedes E-Class wagon has a range of engines, but the popular E 220 d might be all the estate you’ll ever need. It shouldn’t be forgotten though that there are some high-performance AMG units, too. These are otherwise known as the E 63 and E 63 S. Whichever you go for, you’ll find a slick nine-speed automatic transmission waiting for you.
On the road, visibility is exceptional, helped by big door mirrors and an optional 360-degree camera for accurate manoeuvres in constricted spaces. Furthermore, irrespective of height, drivers shouldn’t find it hard to obtain a spot-on seating position. There’s a wide range of adjustment of the steering column and the seat.
Mercedes-Benz’s E-Class Estate is a splendid machine operating in a very able sector. It offers more variety than most challengers due to the presence of the sizzling AMG models, together with more reasonable diesels.
