The iconic Mercedes “G-Wagen” SUV is a statement of intent. Military toughness mixed with modern luxury.
Few vehicles in the world can claim to have the presence of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. This former military off-roader has shed the uniform to integrate into civilian life and ever since it was made available to the public back in 1979 the G-Class has been a cult hero.
The G-Class has constantly been updated throughout its lifespan, but 2018 saw the debut of the ‘new’ G-Class, a second generation of the tough off-roader that was promoted by a surge in popularity over recent years. Despite being ‘new’, the second generation of G-Class is still hugely ‘old’ in style. The rugged, tough, and somewhat simplistic military style is still present, but this is now a vehicle with wealthy customers in mind and as such, it is expected to have an element of luxury and exclusivity about it as well.
Because of its client base, this ultra-tough off-road vehicle has heated leather seating, carbon fibre touches, an array of technology and driver assistance and even an optional digital dashboard. If you were thinking it would be like a German Land Rover Defender, you’re only half right. The G-Class is the ultimate luxury off-roader and has become just as much a symbol of inner city prosperity as it has rural exploration.
That is perhaps exemplified by the lack of any sort of efficient engine under the bonnet. The G-Class is powered by one engine only, a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine. Clearly, this isn’t an ordinary engine and shows just exactly who Mercedes is targeting by producing such a car. The G 63 AMG model produces over 580bhp and makes enough noise to alert everyone to your presence, if the big, bold style didn’t already have them looking.
Naturally, being a high-sided military derived car, the G-Class is not designed with cornering and sporty driving in mind. It is at home off-roading or pottering around fashionable areas of cities. Many celebrities are known to favour the G-Class for its presence and image as well as its exclusivity – not many are seen out on the road.
Undeniably strong, extremely capable and iconic, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is part military beef, part sophisticated socialite and simply cannot be upstaged. You’d have to be a certain type of customer to want one, but that’s the point in it. The G-Class isn’t for everyone, but everyone will talk about it.
You can lease a Mercedes G-Class from £1,754 inc VAT (subject to availability), however the final price of your lease agreement will depend on your chosen annual mileage, initial rental and contract length.
