The early part of the last decade saw a string of compact crossovers released, and they started to dominate the car market, winning a place in the hearts of drivers right across the world. In 2014, Mercedes-Benz entered the fray with this - the Mercedes-Benz GLA. Since then, this car has been a hugely popular machine with Synergy business and personal lease customers.
To borrow from Mercedes’s own naming strategy, this car is essentially an A-Class SUV. The smallest car that the brand offers with a chunky style. This is a stylish little SUV built more for trendy urban roads than any off road action, despite “GL” being Mercedes’s designation for an off-road vehicle. It does, however, come with the option of the ‘4MATIC’ all-wheel drive system and this combined with its higher ride height would mean it wouldn’t have much trouble doing a little bit of gentle off-roading if such a situation arose.
For the new generation of Mercedes-Benz GLA SUV there are petrol, diesel and even a plug-in hybrid version to choose from. The latter is expected to be the most popular powertrain going forward, and it combines an electric motor with a 1.3-litre petrol engine for around 260bhp of power output. It’s capable of 0-62mph in just 7.1-seconds but the real benefit to this powertrain is, of course, the efficiency. It can do almost 202mpg when using its electric motor and puts out just 32g/km of CO2 emissions.
Technology plays a huge part in any modern vehicle and it’s no surprise that the new Mercedes-Benz GLA is no different. “MBUX” is the star of the show here, a system we’ve seen in other Mercedes cars recently, an infotainment setup that features fabulous voice control and the ability to “talk” to your GLA much like an AI programme like Alexa. This technology is encased within a huge digital display that includes such kit like augmented reality navigation in some models, a really futuristic experience. When we’re talking about technology like this, you can of course expect items such as cruise control, smartphone integration and climate control to be part of the specification too.
