For quite a few years the Nissan Micra wasn’t quite able to compete with superminis like the Volkswagen Polo and Ford Fiesta. It just wasn’t as up-to-date and as stylish as the best in class, but all of that changed with the launch of the latest generation Micra – this is now easily one of the best superminis on the market.
The intent to become a more modern and funkier supermini in order to appeal to the masses is laid out first and foremost by the striking new body design, full of lines and motion with the rear door handles cleverly integrated into the C-pillar for a smart 3-door look. Things have also improved on the inside, with a dashboard designed and built with quality in mind. Surrounding the infotainment system at the centre is a wealth of soft-touch materials and a smart design. The colour of the dashboard fascia and other trim inside the cabin can even be changed depending on your tastes with the optional Personalisation Pack. Overall, this is now one of the most vibrant interior designs in the supermini segment.
Petrol engines always seem to be well suited to superminis and the 0.9-litre turbo 3-cylinder unit in the Micra is a gem. Though it only has 89bhp, it is a bright, lively little unit that loves to be driven and really suits the new spirit of the Micra. If diesel is more your cup of tea, there’s a 1.5-litre turbo unit that Nissan claims can reach over 80mpg. Even if it doesn’t quite reach those heights, it’s still going to be a seriously efficient engine and the 92g/km CO2 figure will catch the eye of Synergy business lease customers.
On the road the Micra manages the difficult task of balancing enjoyable driving dynamics with a comfortable ride as well as the finest cars in the class. On a twisty road it really puts a smile on your face, especially with the eager 0.9-litre petrol engine revving away under the bonnet. On a cruise though, it rides more like a larger car which is a testament to the quality of the engineering of the body and suspension.
While the Volkswagen Polo and Ford Fiesta may take the headlines in this area of the market, the Nissan Micra is easily one of the best cars of its genre, a worthy consideration for anybody looking for a quality small car.
