Is anybody really ever surprised by the quality of products that Porsche puts out in the 21st century? Whether it’s a luxury SUV that’s confident off-road, a grand tourer with a hybrid powertrain, or another all-conquering 911, Porsche never seems to fail to impress, and the brand has a midas touch when it comes to building cars that appeal to people who love driving.
The latest jewel to be set into the Stuttgart-based manufacturer’s crown comes in the form of the 718 Spyder, a stunning sports car that blends together key ingredients for any sports car into one of the most desirable performance cars of our time. The Porsche 718 lease deal is a low weight, 2-seater Spyder that’s rear-wheel driven by a mid-mounted 6-cylinder engine.
Porsche’s engines are always a highlight of its cars. This one in particular is an absolute humdinger, a 4.0-litre unit with 415bhp that can send the little Spyder to 62mph from 0 in just 4.4-seconds and on all the way to 187mph. There’s a choice of a manual gearbox or the PDK automatic unit that’s among the world’s great automatic transmissions. You can’t go wrong with either, purists will love the sensations a manual provides, but for maximum speed, the PDK with launch control will take half a second off the 0-62mph sprint time. The optional sports exhaust system adds to the feel of course, providing a sportier sound on demand.
Driving and the love of driving is what this vehicle is all about, and there are very few cars that drive like a 718 Spyder. Its direct, sharp front end helps you clip apexes on twisty roads with ease, the car happy to change direction on demand, while the rear-wheel drive gives a true feeling of balance to the whole experience, and a fair bit of controllable oversteer when requested too.
