Along with its twin – the Cayman – the Porsche Boxster lease is the definitive 2-seater, mid-engine sports car.
When Porsche swept the covers off its new sports car back in 1996, it instantly became its most popular car. Until 2003 – when Porsche launched the Cayenne SUV - the Boxster was the most in-demand model that Porsche produced. Everyone wanted one and its attractive price, sweet 6-cylinder engine and roofless atmosphere made for a truly compelling blend.
The name ‘Boxster’ is taken from the word ‘boxer’ which describes the layout of the engine, and the word ‘roadster’, which is the style of body. 2016 saw the Boxster gain the ‘718’ name too, as Porsche downsized from 6-cylinder engines to a more compact and environmentally superior 4-cylinder turbo.
Those new engines are 2.0-litre or 2.5-litre in size, depending on the model you’ve chosen. In the base of Porsche Boxster leasing, it gives 296bhp and a 0-62mph time of 5.1-seconds, in the more powerful Boxster S, the 2.5-litre unit comes with 345bhp and an improved acceleration time of 4.6-seconds to 62mph. With the optional ‘Sport Chrono Package’ fitted, both models improve their acceleration times by 4 tenths of a second. Both engines come with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard or have the option of a 7-speed double-clutch ‘PDK’ automatic transmission and both engines are also mounted behind the seats in the centre of the car for optimum weight distribution. That engine position makes a key change to the behaviour of the car, giving scalpel-like handling and exciting, involving sensations to the driver.
