Though primarily known for building cars that are simple and easy to afford, Skoda has, over the last 5 years or so, looked to increasingly add more and more touches of luxury and quality to its machines. In no other model in its range is this best demonstrated than in its flagship - the Superb.
What Skoda has done with the Superb isn’t actually new though, instead, this is a return to the luxury and elegance of the 1930’s, when the first Superb was seen on the roads. Launched in 1934, the rather glamorous Superb helped Skoda become the Czech nation’s leading manufacturer, at a time where Czech car building was experiencing a Golden Age, with the likes of Praga and Tatra very globally respected manufacturers.
In 2001, Skoda revived the Superb name to produce a new flagship for the company, and the car we have today is the 3rd generation to appear since then. It is produced using the Volkswagen – Skoda’s parent company – ‘MQB’ platform, the same core used in a host of models across the VW Group extended family.
Under its bonnet you’ll find petrol and diesel units, with a focus on efficiency at the core of the majority of the engines on offer. For the petrol side of the pumps, a 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder produces around 148bhp and is available with a 6-speed manual or ‘DSG’ double-clutch automatic transmission. If you desire power, a 2.0-litre turbo with around 270bhp and all-wheel drive is also offered, this Superb can reach 155mph and is available exclusively with the DSG gearbox. For diesel, the famous 2.0-litre ‘TDI’ turbo units are offered, with either 148 or 187bhp, with 6-speed manuals and DSG gearboxes both offered once again.
There are numerous levels of trim for the Skoda Superb personal lease, from entry level ‘S’ to the luxurious ‘Laurent and Klement’ cars at the top of the range, and the Superb is offered as both a hatchback and an estate. Both cars are known for their very spacious interiors, with lots of room for passengers and cargo – up to 1,950-litres in an estate – as well as the firm’s ‘Simply Clever’ solutions, such as umbrellas stored inside the front doors. DAB digital radio, Bluetooth, a touchscreen infotainment system, air conditioning, rear parking sensors and a host of electronic safety aids all come as standard, while luxuries like heated seating, adaptive suspension and navigation appear in high-spec cars in the range.
