Smart produces one of the most innovative and distinctive machines of the last 30-years
Smart has a story quite unlike any other when it comes to how the company began. The original idea to create an extra-small city car that was fashionable and useable for people living in ever expanding urban environments actually came from Nicholas Hayek, the man behind the Swatch timepieces. His plan to build a Swatch car was formulated back in the 1980’s, but he couldn’t do it himself, so he paid Mercedes-Benz a visit and the rest is history.
In 1994, Smart was officially formed, the name being derived from the first letters of Swatch and Mercedes as well as the word ‘Art’. By 1998, the first Smart cars were rolling off the production line, and little has really altered since then, the concept behind Smart models hasn’t changed and the firm has gone onto sell nearly 2,000,000 models around the world, particularly in large European cities where they are a frequent sight.
Previously, Smart has produced a Roadster as well as an open-cabined ‘Crossblade’ model, but the current line-up is very simple. There are two cars offered, one for two people and one for four, with the model names ‘ForTwo’ and ‘ForFour’ used to differentiate them. The ForTwo is also available as a convertible and both cars are also offered as pure-electric versions that feature a range of up to 99-miles, perfect for urban journeys.
Smart Fact: In 1997 the Smart factory in Hambach, France opened and quickly began to be known in the area by the nickname ‘Smartville’.
