The ForTwo made Smart a global name, and is available as an EV and convertible, as well as the classic hatch.
At just 1.66m wide and 2.69m long, the tiny Smart ForTwo is the smallest car available to lease here at Synergy, but its compact proportions are designed with the city in mind and its popularity across the UK and Europe’s major urban centres is clear for anyone to see.
Visit London, Paris, Rome or Berlin, and you’ll find Smart cars all over the streets. Since its first appearance in 1998, the Smart ForTwo has sold nearly 2,000,000 units worldwide and it is currently into its 3rd generation.
Aside from being offered as a little 2-seater hatchback or convertible with compact petrol engines, the Smart ForTwo is also offered in EV form, offering a range of around 100-miles. While that might not be much compared to some of the latest all-electric cars to be released onto the market, the ForTwo tends to find itself exclusively running around densely packed urban environments where chargers are abundant and total distance travelled isn’t as high.
If petrol is what you prefer, then the 1.0-litre, 70bhp engine or the 0.9-litre turbocharged 88bhp are the combustion engines offered, and both are little 3-cylinder units. Both the engine and transmission are hidden away in the rear of the car, which is what helps the ForTwo keep such tiny proportions. The gearbox on offer is a 5-speed manual as standard, or a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic if you want to pay a bit more for it.
At the time of writing, 5 different trim levels of Smart ForTwo are available, but each Smart is very easy to personalise and that is actively encouraged by the firm. While fairly basic machines towards the lower end of the trim levels, at the higher end you can expect to find much more. Touchscreen infotainment with Bluetooth, DAB digital radio and navigation, parking sensors, smartphone integration, climate control and even heated seats can all be found in the ForTwo range.
Quirky, modern and with a fun spirit, the Smart ForTwo is a terrific car for anyone living in densely populated areas.
