Over the last couple of decades, the car industry has seen a new category of vehicle blossom into one of the most popular shapes a car can come in. City cars, small, lightweight, practical vehicles for the traversal of urban environments have grown and grown, but always remained physically small. The smallest, most compact package you can currently lease here at Synergy comes in the form of the Smart Fortwo coupe, quite possibly the most significant city car ever made.
Curiously, Smart Fortwo coupe car leasing was born from the world of watches. It’s not everyday we can say that. Sure, plenty of watches are inspired by cars and motorsport, but not many watches birth cars. Still, that’s exactly what happened with the Smart Fortwo coupe, which was originally conceived as a Swatch product, via the mind of Nicholas Hayek, co-founder and CEO of The Swatch Group, one of the most powerful and influential Swiss watch conglomerates.
Swatch, understandably, did not have the facilities to follow through on its concept of a ‘Swatch Car’, so presented its idea to Volkswagen, which turned the plan down. Swatch then turned to Mercedes-Benz, which loved the idea, and the rest, as they say, was history. Mercedes did make some adjustments, of course, chief of which was the name. No longer was this car a Swatch, instead, it was decided to be a Smart, which stands for “Swatch-Mercedes Art”.
The defining characteristic of Smart Fortwo coupe leasing is without a doubt, its length. This is an incredibly compact car, at just 2.69 metres. The Fortwo coupe is a two-seater, and has trademark safety cell technology that makes it safe and stable, despite its highly compact design. Power comes from either a tiny 0.9 or 1.0-litre petrol engine, or, more recently, a 66kW electric motor as part of the all-electric Smart EQ brand, which benefits from the new Mercedes-Benz EQ line and its electric technology.
Without a doubt, the Smart Fortwo coupe is not a family car. It has a very small boot, limited passenger space, and isn’t designed for the motorway.
