Posted 1 week agoThere are more than a few crossover SUVs out there that have the looks, but not the substance when it comes to serious off-road credentials. That’s just the fashion of our times, vehicle designers make cars have the image of toughness, but the reality of achieving that toughness brings some drawbacks. Nevertheless, Subaru’s XV is a car that does off-road very well indeed, and it can definitely do what you think it can do from looking at its design.
Subaru has previous when it comes to strong performing all-wheel drive vehicles. We saw the Japanese manufacturer win buckets of World Rally events in the 1990’s, and introduce road cars to our shores that were exclusively all-wheel driven. Think Impreza, Legacy, Forester. The current generation of XV introduced in 2018 in many ways keeps that Subaru spirit alive. It has permanent symmetrical all-wheel drive and another Subaru hallmark - a 2.0-litre petrol engine called a ‘boxer’.
A boxer engine has its cylinders mounted horizontally, which keeps overall weight lower to the ground thus improving the weight distribution and balance of the car. The 2.0-litre 4-cylinder unit in the XV is also supported by a battery and electric motor which supports the engine and boosts overall efficiency, lending the engine a hand during strenuous activity such as moving away from a standstill. Compared to some rivals, it isn’t the most efficient unit out there, but it is a hugely strong and reliable one that has served Subaru vehicles for decades now, being enhanced with each generation. It’s linked to a CVT automatic gearbox too, there’s no option for a manual with this car.
The Subaru XV is very, very well-equipped too. As standard you get a whole host of features many of which can be optional extras on rivals. Subaru intelligent drive, hill descent control, EyeSight driver assistance technology, rear-vehicle detection, front view monitoring, a reversing camera, keyless entry, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are all provided as standard.
