Confident, strong styling make the Suzuki Ignis one of the most distinctive small cars you can lease.
The Suzuki Ignis is an intriguing looking machine, it’s a small, chunky little car with a mixture of modern and retro styling. It looks like nothing else on the road and it’s a sign of Suzuki’s blossoming confidence that it put this style into production.
Suzuki really does have a lot of charm, producing modest but lovable cars at fantastic prices, all with a distinctive Japanese character. The Ignis is one of the newer additions to the Suzuki family, new generations of cars that offer a more confident, distinctive image while maintaining the value and simplicity that made Suzuki’s cars successful in the first place.
Like many of the latest cars, Suzuki has made steps towards implementing hybrid technology. In the Ignis, the Japanese firm has installed a ‘mild’ hybrid setup, where a battery just gives the 1.2-litre petrol engine a helping hand when it needs it, rather than constantly apply power. This assists with reducing CO2 emissions – it’s as low as 97g/km in some models – while also allowing the Ignis to achieve over 50mpg. Currently, this is only available with the manual gearbox option, the automatic transmission is not available with mild hybrid technology.
While small and designed with the urban landscapes in mind, the Ignis does have the option of ‘Allgrip’ all-wheel drive with a few nifty off-road assistance aids such as a grip control feature and hill descent control. This kind of technology is unlikely to ever really be used for off-roading, but in challenging winter conditions it could really prove useful.
As of early 2019, 3 trim levels of Ignis are offered – SZ3, SZ-T and SZ5. Entry level cars all get Bluetooth, air conditioning and DAB digital radio but the top-spec SZ5 looks a real bargain at a modest price increase. It includes navigation, keyless entry, climate control, a rear-view camera and the mild-hybrid engine technology as standard.
Funky, fun and truly excellent value for money, the Suzuki Ignis is winning over a lot of fans here in the UK, vastly exceeding Suzuki’s initial expectations for popularity. This though is no surprise, as the Ignis is a truly excellent little car.
