New Suzuki Swift looks to the future with hybrid technology while seeking to remain Suzuki’s most popular car.
History
In one form or another, the Suzuki Swift has been around since the early 1980’s. However, it only really began to become something special in the mid-2000’s, winning over supermini buyers with its nimble handling, charming design and exceptional value for money. With the launch of the latest Swift, Suzuki looks boldly to the future by introducing new ‘mild’ hybrid technology.
Power
The hybrid system is called ‘mild’ as it doesn’t require a plug to recharge, nor does it generate a powerful boost of energy or run on electric power only. What it does do is restart the engine after stopping and a ‘Start/Stop’ system has engaged and aid the car in accelerating from low speeds – the time where a car uses the most fuel. Electricity is topped up as the car decelerates, using kinetic energy. Suzuki says this means the Swift Hybrid is capable of mid-60’s miles-per-gallon while CO2 figures are at a low 98g/km.
Engine
Having such strong levels of efficiency is, naturally, a very positive attribute for any car to have, but the Swift has more to it than just an efficient drivetrain. It’s a very light car – around 950kg – and because of that is nimble and spritely, it doesn’t require a powerful engine to get a move along. The hottest model – the Swift Sport – uses a 1.4-litre engine with around 138bhp. That might not sound like a lot but it’s enough to get the little Swift to 62mph in a tenth over 8-seconds – plenty quick enough.
There are no diesel engines in the new Swift range, so the most efficient option here is the mild hybrid ‘SZ5’ models. The SZ5 also gets an excellent selection of equipment – adaptive cruise control, navigation, heated door mirrors, climate control, Bluetooth, smartphone connectivity and a lane departure warning system.
Other Models
Other models in the Suzuki Swift car lease range include an all-wheel drive version of the hybrid, the aforementioned Sport model and ‘SZ-T’ and ‘SZ3’ petrol-only models – using the 1.0-litre 3-cylinder and 1.2-litre 4-cylinder respectively.
One of the most affordable ways into a hybrid drivetrain.
