Here in Europe, we’ve been without the Corolla name for a little while. Toyota decided to pull the name from the European market back in 2006, replacing it with ‘Auris’, but now the Japanese giant has decided to bring back its famous name for an all-new model.
Originally, the Corolla arrived back in 1966 and since then it has been sold all over the world and proven popular in all kinds of markets. The new Corolla is officially the 12th generation of this car and that is almost certainly the most popular car of all time, achieving more than 46-million sales globally.
For the Corolla’s return, there are 3 new engines. Understandably, being a Toyota, the focus is very much on hybrid engine technology. The hybrids are 1.8 and 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol options accompanied by the electric motor and produce 120 and 178bhp respectively, with CO2 emissions for each listed at 83 and 89g/km. Looking at the new WLTP figures, 50mpg should be fairly achievable in each of the hybrid units, though it will no doubt be easier in the 1.8-litre. Both the hybrid engines come with a CVT automatic gearbox, so if you want a manual gearbox, you’ll have to opt for the 1.2-litre non-hybrid - a 114bhp engine with emissions of 132g/km and expected fuel efficiency just inside the 40’s.
