Here we have Volkswagen’s answer to the Ford Transit Connect, Citroen Berlingo and Fiat Doblo. It’s a compact panel van that benefits greatly from Volkswagen’s ability to produce high quality products, feeling much like one of the firm’s passenger vehicles, but with that commercial vehicle practicality and toughness.
The Caddy originally came about following some experiments by Volkswagen in the 1970’s, but it wasn’t in Europe, it was the American division of Volkswagen that was working on new ideas based upon the company’s new car at the time, a small hatchback called the Rabbit. Over in Europe this car was known as the Golf, but America being America wanted a pick-up truck version, and so eventually after some experimentation the Volkswagen Caddy arrived on the market in 1979 – though it continued to be known as the Rabbit pick-up over in the States.
Back to the present, where the current VW Caddy van leasing resides. It’s been around in this form since 2015 and it is based on a combination of Volkswagen parts from passenger car stablemates - the Golf and the Touran. It’s available as a standard or long wheelbase model – the latter being known as the ‘Caddy Maxi’ – and these vans offer 3.2m³ or 4.2m³ in load volume respectively, with a maximum payload of 857kg.
Much like a Volkswagen passenger vehicle, engines can be powered by a TDI turbo diesel or a TSI turbo petrol. In the diesel engines line up, the 101bhp and 148bhp tend to prove the most popular, these are 2.0-litre 4-cylinder units that can be paired with one of Volkswagen’s ‘DSG’ double-clutch automatic gearboxes at an additional cost. As for the petrol engines, they come in 1.0-litre, 1.2-litre and 1.4-litre size and tend to be favoured by those running shorter urban routes. Again, they can be specified with a DSG automatic if required on our VW Caddy van lease deals.
