Westfalia-Werke won’t be a company known to many, but when talking about the new Volkswagen California, it’s impossible to not mention them. In the 1950’s, Westfalia began to convert Volkswagen products. Westfalia – since swallowed into the Volkswagen group – was so successful in doing so that its style of camper van eventually became named after the company.
In the 1960’s especially, Volkswagen camper vans became a cultural icon on the west-coast of America, and since the early 2000’s they have become an increasingly common sight in the South-West of Britain, following on from an explosion of 60’s surf revival culture, alongside the rise of the British surfing community as a whole.
Given the history, it is perhaps no surprise that Volkswagen now builds its own camper van, naming it California to hark back to the 60’s. It is based upon the Volkswagen Transporter light panel van, just as it has been for many decades now and the recipe is relatively straight forward, Volkswagen makes use of the space and practicality of its van platform to build a compact camper van with the same footprint as a normal Transporter.
It features enough space to sleep 4 people as well as a fully fitted kitchen, featuring a cool box, sink and stove. A clever use of space also means that VW California car leasing comes with a wardrobe, a camping table with 2 chairs and an interior that can be configured into a living area when the beds are not being used. When it isn’t busy being a home, it also functions just like a high-spec Transporter van, with its powerful 2.0-litre turbo diesel engines that can power all 4 of the wheels as an option, as well as utilise an optional 7-speed double clutch automatic gearbox.
