What exactly is a ‘soft-roader’? Well, in a kind of informal industry-speak sense, it basically describes a car that has been prepared for light off-road capabilities, even though it wasn’t a model designed to tackle difficult terrain. They’ve become something of a fashion over the last decade or so and bridge a gap between an estate car and SUV, often turning out to be a happy compromise between those motoring styles. Volkswagen has 2 such vehicles – both named ‘Alltrack’ – and there’s a Passat version and a Golf version, the car we feature here.
Volkswagen enjoys producing as many variations of the Golf as possible to capitalise on the name’s universal appeal. This is essentially the Golf estate raised and made chunkier to handle some light off-road duties, but the firm also makes a performance estate version that’s lowered and more powerful, giving you an idea on how versatile the company is with its star nameplate.
To make the VW Golf Alltrack lease deals, Volkswagen raised the ride height by 15mm, protected and sealed the underside of the car and added plastic cladding to some exposed outer parts to give it a tougher look. Only a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder diesel is available to power the Alltrack, and it comes with either 148 or 185bhp, depending on which you feel is more appropriate. Opting for the latter will mean your gearbox will be a 7-speed double-clutch ‘DSG’ automatic, a transmission that’s only available as an option on the 148bhp unit. Together, they help deliver power to all four of the Alltrack’s wheels, giving this Golf a good level of off-road capability that, along with the off-road driving mode, gives it the ability to handle rutted tracks and fields with relative ease.
Inside, it’s business as usual and VW Golf Alltrack car leasing doesn’t really have anything to separate it from the standard Golf, which is just the way customers tend to like it. Its spacious boot and comfortable, well thought out interior design make it an easy place to spend time as a driver or passenger.
