Yes, you can have this mighty performance car with an estate body, giving you the ultimate blend of power and practicality, as good for the dog and the kids as it is for the passionate driver sat behind the steering wheel.
The VW Golf Estate models have a solid reputation for delivering practicality and reliability but in ‘R’ form it begins to become a real driver’s car. For a small estate, the handling is exceptional, and you’ll achieve serious cornering speeds once you get to know the car well - there’s also some very impressive acceleration on offer. It’ll make you forget that you’re driving an estate at times, and that’s about as high as compliments get for a car like this.
Volkswagen’s ‘R’ project essentially gives the engineers in Wolfsburg permission to take the Golf’s internals up to about as far as the engineering allows without compromising long-term reliability and the day-in-day-out Volkswagen Golf Estate R lease functionality. The German giant has been doing this for some time with its Golf models, there have been previous VW Golf R Estate leasing models and prior to that there were even ‘R32’ models which were the Golf R’s predecessor.
The VW Golf R Estate features the same engine as the hatchback - a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine that uses turbocharging to churn out a highly impressive 296bhp. Power reaches the road via Volkswagen’s ‘4MOTION’ all-wheel drive system, which can send up to 100% of the power to the rear wheels when necessary. Acceleration is mighty - 4.8-seconds to 62mph – and that statistic would worry a lot of drivers of far more expensive performance cars, particularly on UK roads.
Volkswagen has never offered the Golf R estate with a manual gearbox. When you lease a Golf Estate R The only transmission on offer here is the 7-speed ‘DSG’ double-clutch automatic gearbox. It’s fun to use with its Formula 1-style ‘flappy paddles’ behind the steering wheel, and it really suits the character of the car. Remember, not only has this machine got to perform dynamically, it’s also got to be relaxing and practical. Despite that, the Golf Estate R lease is definitely a more serious personality compared to its GTI brother, though it remains a faithful workhorse throughout. A Volkswagen Golf will always be a Volkswagen Golf, even if it boasts serious performance.
The Golf R Estate Lease is a baby Grand Tourer with huge potential for fun without any of the size drawbacks of the hatchback. It’ll swallow all the shopping, the dog, the kids and anything else you might need while still behaving like a B-road monster when the time is right.
