Pound-for-pound, the Volkswagen up! is one of the best cars produced this decade. In terms of overall design, quality and the actual driving experience, it’s a product that really shines and soon after it launched here in the UK back in late 2011, it was clutching the World Car of the Year trophy.
The up! sits in what we in the trade call the ‘A-Segment’ – the segment of the market that classes the smallest types of car. When the up! came along back in 2011 it was an instant success and made designers and manufactures reconsider what was possible from cars of this size.
All up! models are powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine that produces varying states of power depending on the choice of model – 59bhp, 74bhp, or 113bhp with a turbocharger. Naturally, these are low power outputs but the up! is a very small car with a weight to match, no petrol powered up! weighs over 1000kg. There is another up! that might appeal to somebody who doesn’t need to travel far though, and that’s the ‘e up!’ a pure-electric version of the up that Volkswagen says can travel up to 99-miles on a charge and has around 80bhp produced from its electric motors.
Out on the road you’ll find the Volkswagen up! feels very light and easy to drive, making it perfect for nipping about in urban environments, but out on a country road it can really put a smile on your face too. It has infectious, cheerful characteristics such as the willing small-capacity engine and agile handling that just put a smile on your face, despite the absence of a powerful engine.
Thanks to its clever design, 4 adults can be seated comfortable in the up! and there’s a good-sized boot for this class – 251-litres worth of space growing to over 950 with the rear seats folded down. The up! can also be ordered with a 5-door body, a good solution if you’re planning on carrying passengers fairly often. Synergy customers who prefer a sportier drive should consider the up! GTI, a car that captures the spirit of the original Golf GTI of the 1970’s and simply loves to be driven.
An upbeat feeling, spacious city car that always seems to leave you feeling good, the Volkswagen up! is a tremendous car that shows size isn’t everything.
